NexGard Chew for Dogs is a vet-recommended oral flea and tick treatment for dogs and puppies 8 weeks and older, weighing 4 pounds or more.
It helps in the treatment and prevention of flea infestations. It also treats and controls various types of tick infestations caused by black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, Lone Star ticks, brown dog ticks, and longhorned ticks. Additionally, NexGard flea and tick treatment prevents the Borrelia burgdorferi infections that cause Lyme disease by killing black-legged vector ticks.
Available as a soft, tasty beef-flavored chew that dogs love, NexGard offers proven protection against flea and tick infestations for one month. The oral administration makes flea and tick prevention easy for you and your dog. Just give your dog one chew monthly as a treat, and they have the protection they deserve!
NexGard works quickly after administration, killing fleas before they can lay eggs. It starts killing fleas within only four hours and has been shown to kill 99% of fleas on the dog within 8 hours of administration. In laboratory studies, NexGard demonstrated >90% effectiveness against certain tick species 48 hours after infestation.
NexGard is formulated with afoxolaner as its key ingredient. When a NexGard chew is given orally, the afoxolaner gets absorbed in the bloodstream of the dog. When fleas or ticks bite the treated dog, they ingest afoxolaner. Afoxolaner interferes with the nervous system of insects, causing hyperexcitation and ultimately leading to their death.
Each chew provides a minimum dosage of 1.14 mg/lb of afoxolaner.

No, NexGard doesn’t treat heartworms, but NexGard Spectra covers fleas, ticks, and heartworms.
Most dogs enjoy the taste of this beef-flavored chewable and take it directly by mouth. It can be given with or without food. If the dog resists the chew, you can mix it with pet food. Repeat the dosing every month, preferably on the same date.
When used as directed, NexGard has been shown to be safe and effective for dogs from 8 weeks of age, weighing at least 4 lbs. As it contains afoxolaner, use caution in dogs with a history of epilepsy or other seizure disorders. Always consult your vet before using, especially if your dog is pregnant, breeding, or lactating.
The most frequently reported side effects include vomiting, dry/flaky skin, diarrhea, lethargy, and loss of appetite. Neurologic adverse reactions, including tremors, ataxia, and seizures, have also been reported.
NexGard is indicated for the prevention of Borrelia burgdorferi infections by killing Ixodes scapularis vector ticks.
New fleas will be eliminated within 24 hours, but they may be visible for a while due to re-infestation from the environment or because fleas are hyper-stimulated before dying.
NexGard does not need to be given with food. It can be administered at any time that suits you, with or without a meal.
In well-controlled laboratory studies, no adverse reactions were observed with concomitant use of NexGard with vaccines, anthelmintics, antibiotics (including topicals), steroids, NSAIDs, anesthetics, and antihistamines.
It is never advisable to use any products labeled for dogs on your cat, including NexGard.
NexGard treatment can be started any time of the year and continued in all seasons. Year-round use is recommended for continuous flea and tick prevention. If you have multiple pets, treat all of them with relevant flea treatments.
You can buy NexGard online from a trusted store like CanadaVetExpress or from your veterinarian.
