How does Heartgard Plus work?
Heartgard Plus is formulated with two key ingredients:
- Ivermectin: Ivermectin prevents heartworm disease by eliminating the tissue larval stages of Dirofilaria immitis for a month (30 days) after infection.
- Pyrantel: An anthelmintic that eliminates two species of roundworms and three species of hookworms in dogs.
When administered monthly, these ingredients work together to interrupt the parasite life cycle and help protect your dog from intestinal and heartworm infections.
What to know before using Heartgard Plus for Dogs?
- Heartgard Plus Chews have demonstrated a wide margin of safety at the recommended dose level in dogs, including pregnant or breeding dogs, stud dogs, and puppies.
- Heartgard Plus prevents heartworm disease but does not kill adult heartworms. Therefore, dogs should be tested for the existence of heartworm infection before starting the treatment.
- For dogs diagnosed with heartworms, a vet-guided treatment for the removal of adult heartworms and microfilariae is necessary before initiating a heartworm prevention program with Heartgard Plus.
Nuheart Generic Heartgard Tablets - Heartworm Prevention for Dogs
Nuheart is a generic alternative to Heartgard that contains ivermectin for the prevention of heartworm disease in dogs. When administered monthly as directed, Nuheart helps eliminate developing heartworm larvae (Dirofilaria immitis) and prevents them from maturing into adult heartworms. Suitable for puppies and dogs 6 weeks of age and older, Nuheart provides reliable protection against heartworm infection.
Note: Unlike Heartgard Plus, Nuheart contains ivermectin only for heartworm disease prevention. It does not treat intestinal worms.
